Engaging and inspiring young people in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) has long been identified as an area of key strategic importance economically, developmentally and socially . Studies such as the Royal Society’s 2005 “Taking a Leading Role” identify role models and meeting professional scientists as key factors in career and study choices, while organizations such as STEMNET have been formed to “increase young people’s choices and chances through STEM.”
Inventum, the first board game created by a Spanish university to foster interest in knowledge transfer, aims to promote the culture of entrepreneurship in society at large and raise awareness of the importance of the process of valorisation and knowledge transfer. The project was funded by the then Ministry of Science and Innovation - Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (MICINN-FECYT) in its call for grants for the promotion of scientific culture and innovation.
The Researchers’ Night is an event promoted and financed by the European Commission under its Seventh Framework Programme and by local Foundations.
It takes place every year (since 2006) on the last Friday of September simultaneously in hundreds of European cities (in Piedmont, from 3 in 2006 to 8 in 2011).
2012 will be the 7th edition of the Researchers’ Night in Torino and Piedmont. This year will cover also another region: the Aosta Valley.
UNIG∑NIOS is an innovative initiative that is completely in keeping with the ideals extolled by the University of Oviedo, designed to disseminate and encourage an understanding of science throughout society, and especially in relation to the youth of today. Its ultimate aim is to encourage direct interaction between the main players in science (researchers) and the students of today, who will be the scientists of tomorrow.
Thanks to the confluence of recent researches into the fields of Neurosciences, Phisiology, Biology, Physics, Cognitive Studies, radical changes have occurred in the traditional processes of western culture inherent in the acquisition and understanding of knowledge.
Humanities have taken part to the current transformation of epistemological paradigms as well. This is proved by the recent contributions of Neuroaesthetics, Cognitive Cultural Studies, Philosophy of Mind, Neurophenomenology, etc.
