Engaging and inspiring young people in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) has long been identified as an area of key strategic importance economically, developmentally and socially . Studies such as the Royal Society’s 2005 “Taking a Leading Role” identify role models and meeting professional scientists as key factors in career and study choices, while organizations such as STEMNET have been formed to “increase young people’s choices and chances through STEM.”
H2Roma is a communication event on sustainability of energy, mobility and cars promoted by CIRPS - Interuniversity Research Centre for Sustainable Development - Sapienza University of Rome, CNR - National Research Council - Energy and Transportation Department, ENEA – Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development. The scientific coordination is assigned to Prof. Orecchini and his research section SEM – Energy and Mobility Systems of CIRPS.
In 2009 we developed a pilot project funded by the University of Girona (Spain), combining Educational Innovation and Development Cooperation, which was held at Shanti Bhavan, a rural school in South India.
Project based activities are a good way to expose secondary school students to more science and math at earlier grades. In the last few years has been a decrease of enrolment for engineering programs in Spain. For this reason, the University of Girona (UdG), the Social Council of UdG and the Catalan Government started initiatives, with the aim of increasing the interest of students for technology and promote engineering skills, capabilities and values. These institutions support and promote scientific and technological activities of recreational nature that are attractive for students.
The University of Leeds has a highly regarded outreach programme of considerable depth and breadth reaching over 49,000 young people, parents and carers during 2010/11. Within this the University takes very seriously its role in explaining the complexities of the student finance system to young people and their parents and has established an innovative partnership project with Santander.
Real training and virtual backup: this is the project Sapienza Fashion – ModaSapienza, based on a series of seminars held by top managers, analysts and entrepreneurs who best represent the Italian and international fashion system. We produced the website www.seminarimodasapienza.it with its corresponding Facebook page (modasapienza) and twitter account (#modasapienza). The website was launched in January 2012 following a warm-up period in December 2011.
The Jean Monnet Information and Research Activity on EU Foreign Policy and DEMocracy Promotion in the Mediterranean area (EUDEM) – coordinated by prof. Stefania Panebianco - was funded by the LLP of the European Commission and carried out by the University of Catania. The project appeared to timely grasp the winds of democratic change blowing in the Mediterranean area. Even if the research topic was identified in January 2010, it became even more relevant in 2011, when popular uprisings took place in many Arab countries.
