The Faculty of Science (FoS) of the Charles University in Prague presented its new communication concept called SCIENTISTS in early November last year. The objective of this concept is to approach elementary and secondary school students & teachers, media, education industry experts, as well as the general public.
„Staging Files“ is the motto of history and theatre projects at the University of Bremen dealing with controversial topics of Bremen’s history. Students of the history department and actors of the bremer shakespeare company (bsc) have developed and staged play readings from original documents since 2007. The project was initiated and is led by Dr. Eva Schöck-Quinteros (University of Bremen), supported by Sigrid Dauks (University Archive Bremen) and Peter Lüchinger (bsc).
The G8 University Summit (17-19 May 2009) has been held in Torino, in the year of the Italian Presidency of the G8 Heads of State, promoted by CRUI (Conference of Italian Universities Rectors), Politecnico di Torino and the Italian Commission for UNESCO. The meeting involved all the Universities in the G8 countries, the Outreach 5 (Brazil, China, India, and South Africa), the MEM group (South Corea, Australia, Indonesia), some Mediterranean countries, the Middle East, Latin America and Africa to talk about Sustainability.
Centre of the Cell is a £4 million biomedical science centre; educational website and outreach project aimed at children and young people aged 9 to 19, families and youth and community groups. The Centre of the Cell 'Pod' (resembling a 16 cell human embryo) is dramatically suspended above the laboratories and provides young people with a unique interactive insight into what scientists do and how their work influences real life. Centre of the Cell's Director, Professor Fran Balkwill OBE FMedSci, is a leading cancer researcher and science communication expert.
Inventum, the first board game created by a Spanish university to foster interest in knowledge transfer, aims to promote the culture of entrepreneurship in society at large and raise awareness of the importance of the process of valorisation and knowledge transfer. The project was funded by the then Ministry of Science and Innovation - Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (MICINN-FECYT) in its call for grants for the promotion of scientific culture and innovation.
Dr. Joanne Tippett launched Ketso as a social enterprise emanating from her research into community planning and ecological design at the University of Manchester. Ketso is a colourful, hands-on toolkit for creative engagement. This re-useable toolkit enables people with differing levels of confidence and ability to engage with each other and share ideas.
Dr. Tippett’s development of Ketso was driven by one clear aim: to enable all voices to be heard in a stimulating and creative dialogue.
There are around 7,000 (mostly deliberate) grassfires in Wales each year which endanger lives and property; impact local businesses, tourism and the countryside; and destroy wildlife and forestry resources. Such deliberate fires cost South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (SWFRS) around £7m annually.
In 1960 Theodore Maiman succeeded in the first experimental demonstration of the laser. Fifty years later it is difficult to figure out a scientific discipline that does not involve a laser or a day without any laser-based devices. The aim of this project was the development of an outreach book about lasers to increase the interest for science among students and the general public. Two thousand copies were distributed in universities, schools and libraries and now it is available to be freely downloaded.
The I National Competition of Crystallization in the School (http://www.lec.csic.es/concurso/) is a contest on crystallography and crystallization for young pupils that has been carried out among 20 secondary schools across 7 provinces (Granada, Cadiz and Malaga, Gerona, Oviedo, Murcia and Zaragoza) of 5 different regions (Andalusia, Catalonia, Asturias, Murcia and Aragon) throughout Spain.
In Spain, it is well known that secondary school students’ motivation to study Science (especially Mathematics) is not very strong. This is a common problem to almost all Europe. Spanish and Andalusian governments have general policies on education to promote the study of Science. They are necessary and convenient. However, we think that local actions in the students’ environment, which supplement these policies, are also needed.
