The University of Leeds has a highly regarded outreach programme of considerable depth and breadth reaching over 49,000 young people, parents and carers during 2010/11. Within this the University takes very seriously its role in explaining the complexities of the student finance system to young people and their parents and has established an innovative partnership project with Santander.
The Sex and History project, which is part of Sexual Knowledge, Sexual History at the University of Exeter’s Centre for Medical History, draws upon the world-leading research of Dr Rebecca Langlands and Professor Kate Fisher to meet the need for effective sex and relationship education. It empowers young people to discuss pressing contemporary issues in a supportive environment. At its heart is a methodology that uses historical objects from past cultures such as ancient Rome or China as a springboard for discussion, debate and creative responses.

Centre of the Cell is a £4 million biomedical science centre; educational website and outreach project aimed at children and young people aged 9 to 19, families and youth and community groups. The Centre of the Cell 'Pod' (resembling a 16 cell human embryo) is dramatically suspended above the laboratories and provides young people with a unique interactive insight into what scientists do and how their work influences real life. Centre of the Cell's Director, Professor Fran Balkwill OBE FMedSci, is a leading cancer researcher and science communication expert.
The Natural Resources EXPLORATORIUM is a project launched by the Barcelona Knowledge Campus (BKC)—a joint initiative of the Universitat de Barcelona (UB) and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) that has been recognised as an International Campus of Excellence—in collaboration with the Berga Town Council. The project draws on the strengths of the three participating institutions: the scientific and technical knowledge of two of Catalonia’s top universities, and the Town Council’s ability to reach out to the public.
A key strategic aim at St George's, University of London (SGUL) is to encourage fair access to medicine and healthcare careers, regardless of social background. To ensure this we undertake programmes aimed at increasing awareness, boosting aspiration and raising attainment among students from disadvantaged backgrounds who would not otherwise consider Higher Education (HE). The students we work with are the NHS employees of tomorrow, and as such we are keen to ensure that the workforce we train is truly representative of the communities it will serve.
The Faculty of Science of Communication at the Sapienza University of Rome in 2005 organized an innovative project about educational and civic participation, called “Political Game” that uses simulation and role play as a way of teaching. In collaboration with students, administrative staff and teachers of Faculty were involved in the simulation of the election for mayor of Rome.
