In 2008, the University of East Anglia and its partners were selected as one of a number of pilot projects seeking to enhance public engagement activity within UK Higher Education Institutions (the Beacons for Public Engagement project). This marked the birth of CUE East (Community University Engagement) which sought to bring together community groups, academics, schools etc., enabling them to work in partnership with one another, drawing upon each others expertise to reach and benefit new audiences.

Sport for LIFE

Introduction
Sport for LIFE (SFL) is a 12 week physical activity and health programme designed for 8-9 year old children in areas of greatest disadvantage in Northern Ireland. It was designed by academics in the Ulster Sports Academy in partnership with Education and Library Board professionals. The goals of the programme were to:

1. increase knowledge and awareness of the benefits of participation in sport, physical activity and healthy eating in schoolchildren aged 8-9 years from the most socio-economically disadvantaged areas of Northern Ireland

Introduction and Background

Engaging and inspiring young people in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) has long been identified as an area of key strategic importance economically, developmentally and socially . Studies such as the Royal Society’s 2005 “Taking a Leading Role” identify role models and meeting professional scientists as key factors in career and study choices, while organizations such as STEMNET have been formed to “increase young people’s choices and chances through STEM.”

H2Roma is a communication event on sustainability of energy, mobility and cars promoted by CIRPS - Interuniversity Research Centre for Sustainable Development - Sapienza University of Rome, CNR - National Research Council - Energy and Transportation Department, ENEA – Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development. Project based activities are a good way to expose secondary school students to more science and math at earlier grades. In the last few years has been a decrease of enrolment for engineering programs in Spain. For this reason, the University of Girona (UdG), the Social Council of UdG and the Catalan Government started initiatives, with the aim of increasing the interest of students for technology and promote engineering skills, capabilities and values. These institutions support and promote scientific and technological activities of recreational nature that are attractive for students.

Background

Cambridge recently set out an aspiration to improve the means by which it communicates with prospective applicants in the UK. This has resulted in a series of projects under the ‘Be Cambridge’ title aimed at prospective undergraduate applicants in Year 12 or equivalent (i.e. 16-17 year olds) from under-represented groups.

The project began with a scoping study to look at use of new media by our target audience. This included a detailed analysis of social media use, as well as focus groups across the country. The main findings were:

The University of Leeds has a highly regarded outreach programme of considerable depth and breadth reaching over 49,000 young people, parents and carers during 2010/11. Within this the University takes very seriously its role in explaining the complexities of the student finance system to young people and their parents and has established an innovative partnership project with Santander.
