Team H2politO - Politecnico di Torino

Optional Abstract:

H₂politO is a team made of students from Politecnico of Turin. Since 2007 the team aims to create prototypes of low consumption Eco-sustainable vehicles with the final ambition of shaping the engineers of the future, leaders in their application fields. The team's projects success is not only due to the capability of one single member, but also to the technical and economic support offered by public institutions and partner companies. In order to maintain those relations, it is necessary to share the same mission and to share a communication channel that goes from the interpersonal level to the use of all the media. It is also important to refer to academic figures that have the right competences in management, marketing and communication, those capabilities are essential in every company. In order to evaluate earlier communication actives, the team resorts to tools (such as qualitative-quantitative questionnaires, indicators for web channels activities) which results reflects their efficiency or inefficiency, so that the team can improve the strategies applied to the communication activities.

The Team mission is to shape a new breed of engineers leader in their relative fields and to represent the educational excellence of our university.

One of the Team's goals is to improve the Team visibility inside and outside our university, to do that we defined three communication targets: institutions, companies and students. To communicate with them the Team uses Prezi, Power Point presentations, audiovisual products and “elevator pitch” strategy in the interpersonal approach.

The Team captured the institution attention thanks to the fact that our projects look towards the future because of their eco-sustainability.
In order to increase the Team awareness between the institutions we repeatedly contact them and constantly update them about H2politO 's innovations and achievements. The Team also participate to many national and international events such as the Shell Eco-marathon and a convention organized by the European Parliament: IDRA was the first students made vehicle entering the parliament.
The Team is often invited to participate to international congress, for example the SAE congress in Detroit.

The Team strategy in communicate with the companies takes advantage of the high study qualification of his members. H2politO looks for collaborations that are profitable for both the Team and the companies.
The companies gain visibility because they become Team's sponsor: their logo will be placed on IDRA and XAM's body and on all the Team's communication channels. Nonetheless, the Politecnico is a renowned institution and it is an honor for every company to be its partner.
The Team in exchange receive financial funds, technical components and the advices needed to carry on with its prototypes.
H2politO gets in touch with the companies participating to events that promote the Eco-sustainability and the technological innovation such as "Viva l'auto" in Turin, "Autodesk Digital Prototyping Forum" in Modena and "Motorshow" in Bologna.
Some companies, Autodesk and Siemens for example, are involved with the Team through the project PACE that interconnects many companies and many universities worldwide. Politecnico of Turin through H2politO was the only italian university to be selected to join PACE's project.

The communication towards the students is not less important. To communicate with them the Team uses nowadays media (facebook, twitter, linkedIn, the website and wikipedia) and classical media (brochures, roll up and posters around the university). In particular H2politO uses QR code on every flyer to directly connect people with the facebook page.
The Team periodically organize the recruitment, allowing young students to understand what the Team does and what it has to offer: a complete professional and personal growth.
H2politO participates to all the events organized by the Politecnico to get in touch with as many students as possible.
The members have an opportunity to lead their educational path by creating and crafting their own thesis.
Last but not least, being a member of the Team allows you to build a closer relation with many professional figures inside the Politecnico.

The achievement of our growth is measured both quantitatively and qualitatively.
One of the qualitative feedback we received was the opportunity to meet several important people, for example we met Mr. Giorgio Napolitano, president of the Italian Republic, who assigned to Team H2politO the medal of honor.
The Team has been invited to many important events, television programs, national news and has been published on many technical print.

Moreover, during the celebrations of the 150th anniversary of Italian unification we participated in several events, always receiving cheers and appreciation from councilors.
The communication towards our institute’s students is evaluated on the basis of the enthusiasm around our project and the increasing dimension and organizational structure of the Team.
Foreign students are increasing year by year, reinforcing our policy of internationalization.
The number of prizes won by the Team prove the value of H2politO to the world.

In addition to the quantitative information given by the internet about our channels, the Team also designed a questionnaire targeting Politecnico’s students in order to verify the commitment towards extra-academic projects and Teamwork. We used this questionnaire to test how much other students are aware of H2politO and other University Teams.
The Team will use the information collected with the questionnaire to figure how to improve the communication toward the students.

H2politO took advantage of the information about daily visit to the facebook Team page to modify the way news were uploaded: the Team noticed that the number of visitors decreased significantly when there are no new news to the website for a long time. In order to avoid this problem H2politO post on the facebook news and links at least twice a week.

The numbers of visit to facebook page and website are increasing over the last years: the number of “I like” on facebook are 4829 (4277 in Italy, 73 in Spain, 71 in Indonesia, 61 USA) and in the last two months IDRA web page had a growth of 15.7% and XAM web page increased of 16.1%.

During its communication campaign, the Team tries to find new methods to approach its audience in order to extend it. For example, recently a few of facebook’s fans drew the prototypes, sharing their drawings on the web. This fact allowed the Team to launch the challenge to all fans to try to replicate the job, stimulating imagination and fantasy. The difference among H2politO and other students Teams is that it manages a big number of members, 52, reaching a medium company dimension. To do so Team’s organization and internal communication must be well defined. The organizational chart underlines the functional structure: while technical engineers are “in line”, designing and producing vehicles, management and communication engineers works as staff function, coordinating the whole Team workflow.

This standardized structure allows the project development sustainability. In fact, due to the high level of the turnover among years, it’s necessary to provide a standard structure allowing flexibility but avoiding confusion. The technological carryover is granted by the reporting of every phase of the lifecycle of the vehicle and by the members final essays.

Finally, the main activity that provides continuity and increase awareness, is the recruitment of new members that are involved in the project and formed accordingly the Team’s vision while older members are formed as managers of the new ones. This is how the Team avoids the loss of core information and technical capabilities.

One of Team’s plans for the future is to prepare a live web streaming service that will allow H2politO’s fans to watch the technical job doing in the laboratories.
